Tensions between law enforcement personnel and Dumri MLA Jairam Kumar Mahto escalated further after the Anti-Terrorism Squad wing of the Jharkhand Police Association demanded his immediate arrest. The association issued a stern warning of statewide agitation if prompt legal action is not taken against the legislator and his associates following a confrontation at a police station in Dhanbad.
The controversy stems from an incident where MLA Jairam Mahto allegedly engaged in a heated telephone argument with Barwadda Police Station in-charge Ravi Kumar, hurling verbal abuses and issuing threats. Later that night, the legislator reportedly arrived at the Barwadda police station accompanied by supporters, entered the officer-in-charge’s chamber, ransacked official desk items, and broke the officer’s nameplate.
Following the confrontation, an official First Information Report was lodged at the Barwadda police station against Jairam Mahto and nearly ten named associates under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for deterring public servants from duty, criminal intimidation, and property damage. Condemning the act, representatives of the Jharkhand Police Association and its ATS wing stated that targeting on-duty personnel severely tarnishes the dignity and safety of the police force. The association stressed that law enforcement agencies must expedite all pending procedures to apprehend the accused without delay, cautioning that officers across the state would launch organized protests if their demands are ignored.
Responding to the allegations and the association’s ultimatum, Jairam Mahto remained defiant, stating that he would not succumb to intimidation. The Dumri legislator accused certain police officials of harassing ordinary citizens and framing them in false cases, maintaining that his stance is directed against systemic corruption rather than the entire police department.
